John D. Meara

John D. Meara focuses his practice on complex litigation, including insurance defense, premises liability and personal injury litigation.

John has well-established experience in all stages of litigation in the areas of insurance defense, personal injury, property damage and environmental liability. He also has significant experience in utilizing alternative dispute resolution methods, such as arbitration and mediation, to successfully defend and resolve cases.

In addition to his litigation background, John has also provided a higher-education institution with assistance in the areas of regulatory compliance, and risk assessment and avoidance.

During law school, John served as a summer intern to the Honorable Justice Brian P. Stern of the Rhode Island Superior Court, followed by an externship with Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Francis X. Flaherty.

Representative Accomplishments

  • Significantly contributed to two successful petitions of certiorari regarding the denial of accidental disability pensions before the Rhode Island Supreme Court.
  • Successfully rejected tender of defense utilizing language contained in the respective insurance policies in dispute between two Fortune 500 corporations.
  • Successfully obtained summary judgment on personal injury claims asserted against a yacht brokerage for injuries allegedly sustained during a boat show.
  • Substantially contributed to brief opposing motion for summary judgment in a unique negligent misrepresentation case regarding the expiration of stock options.
  • Substantially contributed to the defense and resolution of a significant personal injury claim prosecuted against a large commercial fishing operation.
  • Successfully tendered defense to appropriate carrier in lawsuit alleging products liability.
